Hawley earns Sierra Club endorsement
MICHAEL NEIBAUER Journal staff writer
The Sierra Club's Mount Vernon and Great Falls branches have endorsed Republican Buzz Hawley over incumbent Democrat Penelope A. Gross in the race for Mason District supervisor in Fairfax County.
``We are looking for leaders with the right environmental instincts to address the many complex problems concerning clean air, clean water, land-use and transportation faced by Fairfax County," Roger Diedrich, vice chairman of the Great Falls Sierra Club, said in a statement. ``We have every expectation that Buzz is a candidate we can work with in that regard."
Gross ``had not been receptive to requests for support of transit projects," Diedrich said Tuesday. Hawley said in interviews with the Sierra Club that he's very anxious to get behind such things.
The Sierra Club is one of the largest environmental activism organizations. Its two Fairfax branches represent more than 8,000 Northern Virginians.
